The North Fork of Long Island is a very special place for Merlot to find a home. With a macro climate similar to its place of origin Merlot thrives in the cool maritime climate of the North Fork. Merlot was originally bred from a cross of Cabernet Franc x Magdeleine Noirs des Charentes, one an ancient red and the other an early ripener. Long Island vineyard managers know that if you want a red variety that is going to perform beyond expectations every year then, you need to plant Merlot.
Merlots half-brother Cabernet Sauvignon has been a complimentary blending component for centuries. Initially planted on Long Island as a blending component for Merlot this slow ripening variety has vintages where it can stand on its own but, consistently every year Cabernet Sauvignon wants to be next to Merlot in the blending trials for the Harbinger blend.
The 2016 Harbinger with its Dark & sweet fruit aromas pull in subtle boozy beach plum & dried herbs to the mouth. Merlot sets a big smooth base while the Cabernet Sauvignon adds structure and hints of currant. Lush blackberry acidity on the finish keeps every sip fresh and smooth. Sumptuous on its own or savor it with earthy protein rich dishes.
